With a beat that offers a nice tropical twist on Hotline Bling, this isn’t Drake’s finest lyrical hour – ah, how relatable the tribulations of having to deal with insincere people when you’re famous! But the chorus is karaoke-strong, Drake singing forcefully in his higher register, as if doing an impromptu performance on a banquette in a busy club. Hopefully, the new album Certified Lover Boy will expand on this. Demons (feat Fivio Foreign and Sosa Geek) (2020)įor someone who attaches himself – some have said parasitically – to all sorts of global music styles, Drake has done relatively little drill, though this track from the water-treading Dark Lane Demo Tapes suggests he’s well-suited to its bass lurch and asymmetric cymbals. But he closes the album with a beautifully jazzy take on a particular Drake mode: executive slam poetry, as if delivered conversationally to businessmen around the Nespresso machine in a first-class airport lounge. Good luck, I hope I gave you at least one new artist to enjoy. The collaborative album with Future, What a Time to Be Alive, is overrated, Drake wanting to tick off an Atlanta trap project but struggling to write hooks that find purchase in the cold snares (the club-igniting Jumpman is dumb, boring and rips off Gucci Mane, do not me). Long list lots of reading I apologize if it's disjointed or not very well put together I was back and forth a lot between playlists and album titles. Cole's newer singles mostly The Climb back, any of Kendrick's stuff, TPAB is probably the best for your interests, Earl's newest album isn't the best example so I would go with the one just before it, Lightweight Literate only has one album so far, i would do general admission for MGK, BONES had a lot of stuff most of it what you're looking for, iamjakehill has a lot of incredible music some with metal portions of them, ski mask is back and forth between meaningful and lighthearted so just find something his music is pretty good as a whole, hopsin's Ill mind stuff is good and so is a lot of everything else, tech has a lot of music dating back to the 90's and he had a lot of really good stuff too pretty back and forth like ski mask but again all good probably start with something else, most of hobo johnson's is odd but you'll probably like it, most of it is similar to what you're looking for, yavid just avoid boogerman everything else is probably exactly what you're looking for, G-Eazy is like a lot of guys pretty back and forth the beautiful and the damned is a good start, and Token eraser shavings is probably the best bet, he's pretty damn good and I think comparable to Eminem's older more serious stuff, like the MM lp's. I recommend flower boy for Tyler, I recommend J. Cole, Kendrick lamar, most of Earl Sweatshirt, Lightweight Literate, a good chunk of machine gun kelly starting with general admission and ending with whatever came before tickets to my downfall, BONES, iamjakehill, some of ski mask the slump god's stuff, most of hopsin, most of tech n9ne, hobo johnson, Yavid, a good bit of G-Eazy, Token, and many many more. Some artists have changed styles and lyric conversation over the years but you can listen and see if any are what you looking for. There this just a few popular artists and some not so popular but ones I like. Similar artists - Joey Badass, Mick Jenkins, Ab-soul Similar artists - JID, Earthgang, Spillage Village Similar artists - Childish Gambino, Kid Cudi, Chance the Rapper Old school Kanye West (especially his first 2 albums) There are a lot more but if you like a certain artist you can check out their discography and artists similar to them. Here are just a few artists that I feel fit that "conscious" hip-hop some label it. Was recorded back in the 90s but lyrics hold heavy weight still in today's culture. I personally think Blackstar - "Thieves in the night" is the best lyrical hip-hop song I've ever heard. I have no doubt there are more and I'd love to hear their music if you all could be so kind as to point me in the right direction. Only real artist I know of doing this, and pardon my sheltered childhood and naivete, is Eminem. I just want a song that has a great beat and sound that makes you think and ask some questions. Or maybe they're talking about their bad drug habit. Maybe it is a song about gangbanging, but instead he (or she or they) is talking about the horrible effects of it on their community. I want an artist that can make a good beat and rhythm that has me bobbing my head but also thinking critically about the message their song(s) is trying to convey. But I feel like there has to be more to it than that. I know that these genres get a reputation of being just about sex, drugs and getting money. I'm just looking to expand my musical palette, so to speak. I know this sounds like a vague question, so let me explain.
